| es_PE |
dc.description.abstract | Periodontal diseases are the result of the accumulation of microorganisms around tooth with the stimulation of the immune system, they constitute a group of alterations about protection and support tooth tissues, which have, in great majority, an infectious origin and inflammatory character. By the type of tissue they affect, can be classified into gingivitis, if they are limited to protective tissue, or periodontitis if the supporting tissues are involved in. It is widely accepted that bacterial plaque is the most important etiological agent of periodontal diseases. However, bacteria are only the stimulus for the immune system in which they activate various defense mechanisms that, in the attempt to stop infection, changes the metabolism of the periodontal tissues resulting in the loss of periodontal support. Some of the microorganisms involved in its etiology are Porphyromonas gingivalis, Aggregatibacter actinobacillus and Tannerella forsythia. Oral mucosal cells, such as gingival epithelial cells in inflamed regions, produce many pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α, and adhesion molecules. In periodontitis, hematopoietic immune cells such as T cells, B cells, monocytes and neutrophils are retained and accumulated in inflamed areas; suggesting that oral mucosal cells participate actively in the infiltration of these immune cells by the cytokines and adhesion molecules produced. | es_PE |
